The fine textured, compact branching, dark wine colored foliage of Physocarpus opulifolious 'Summer Wine' blends fabulously with soft pink-white blooms that appear in late spring and ornate fruit that appears in the fall. Fast growing; few, if any, pest problems. Pruning and other maintenance is rarely needed. Ninebark is beautiful in groupings and mass plantings, mixed beds and borders, containers, or as an accent or screen. Older plants exfoliate bark into papery strips. Adaptable to difficult situations, acidic and alkaline soils. Best if pruned immediately after blooming. Buds set the summer prior to blooming. Prefers moderate moisture but will tolerate dry conditions once estblished. Fertilize in early spring with a slow release fertilizer for trees and shrubs.
